Sorry, have been really busy in December and also procrastinating my blog.
Had my first adjustment on the 22nd last month, was not as scary as i thought it was. The dentist was complementary of my progress and said that I was actually progressing faster then he thought I would. Well done teeth! The tightening was pretty quick, I would say 15 minutes or so, where he changed the strings to slightly shorter ones. Felt a bit of tightness when he was doing it, but nothing too serious. The day itself went by ok, with sensitivities in particular to the incisors and canines – which resulted into a soft food diet for about 3 days. I was eating almost normally again my Christmas.
I have also managed to purchase myself a water flosser. Picked up a Panasonic one, and the first thing in my head when I used it, was “where have you been all my life?!”. If you have braces, heck even if you don’t – Pick one up now! . It cost a little bit, but the amount of time saved and that feeling of cleanliness – Babam!
Had a few massive ulcers over the past few weeks, and they seem to happen a lot on the right side of my mouth, around my lip area. I do get a few near my gums, but majority of them are self inflicted (accidentally ramming them with the tip of my tooth brush).
As usual a picture of my teeth. Now at day 50. I noticed that my incisors have straighten itself out and the gap where my premolars used to be are slightly closer. The gap on the right side of my mouth seems to be closing faster though.
So nothing much on the braces lately, don’t see much change on how it looks but am now able to clench my teeth a little. I also notice a small clicking sound on my canines and incisors when i clench. Was not there before. Developed a small ulcer on my right cheek near the lip. Been applying Bonjela on it after every brush to numb the pain a little. Oddly i am also noticing my inner cheek being a bit more puffy? Not sure if that that’s the word, just feels thicker?
Am flying off to Bali tonight for a few days for work, hopefully i’ll be able to snack on some local delights! Apparently its thunderstorms and raindrops every day though over in Bali, will try and catch a picture of a sunset.
Ever get that feeling sometimes, when you are mentally tired, and you are sort of just dozing off and day dreaming, and moderately depressed for some odd reason. When every song that pops up from the speakers sets a tone and mood to whatever you are looking at. That things sort of just slows down around you and you get into bouts of personal reflection and it just feels like that you are inspired. Where every problem just seems so small suddenly, and there is this outburst inside that is so contained, but wants is itching to find a way out of you; Not by words and action, but by something that you can’t really put a finger on. Your creative juices start flowing and everything around you becomes so simple and yet so related. Where yellow lights and hues around you suddenly have unimaginable spectrums that is associated to you. And then the song changes – and it feels that the previous chapter should have been written, and abruptly all of you have all that 3 minutes of a song, is now all but a memory. A friend told me once, that it helps to have a soundtrack in life. I wonder if she meant more than that.
So, its been a week now since i have got my braces on. Been rather uneventful apart from day 6 when i was brushing my teeth after lunch. Was cleaning my brackets when the bracket on my left incisor decided to pop out. The feeling was weird as i saw the bracket hanging on its own on the string. Believe it or not, i felt that my tooth was naked and it felt loose. Got myself to the dentist soon after to get it re-fixed. Was warned to avoid hard foods etc… although i did not really had any when the bracket popped. He was abit grumpy putting in the new bracket but i’ll have to bear with him for a long time, so i’ll let him off easy this time :p
Been getting this small cut on my right inner cheeks near my lips from one of the brackets but not too painful, the mouthwash usually cleans it up and numbs the pain. I do however feel that my mouth is getting drier than usual. Have a lip balm to make sure that my lips don’t crack but going to have to keep myself better hydrated too.
Apart from my braces, am thinking again if i should start writing up on other stuff, like my life and perspectives on this page. Been reading up on others on wordpress and its rather inspiring to see what words can become. Food for thought.
Well its Day 4 of having my braces on my uppers put it. The first few days was a bit of trial and error on what i could eat and what i could not. Fortunately i could bite a little with my molars, but any contact with any other teeth would result in pain. Mild discomforts & tightness, but nothing too severe. Am also becoming quicker with ‘the wash’. I swear my dental hygiene is now off the roof and also think that my teeth has gone one shade whiter. I have also progressed to slightly more solid food now, although my eating speed is still really slow. Will give my weight a check in a week and see if the myth of losing weight from braces is true. Also bought additional toothbrushes and stuff for travel purposes. Should come in handy.
Saying that, horrible weekend for my football team, Arsenal. Played well and still managed to lose the game. Really need to catch a break.
So, i finally got the courage for getting my braces on after chickening out on multiple attempts. After getting all my necessary pre-work done a few weeks before, i made my way to the orthodontist on Thursday morning to face the metal.
Had pictures of my teeth taken in multiple angles and was then told to finally sit down on the torture chair to begin the works. Only going to get my uppers done first this time around, with my lowers being done in February next year.
What was terrifying in my head turned out to be slightly anti climatic as i sat down and waited as the dentist cemented one braces at a time onto my uppers. A few micronaps here and there and it was time for the arcwire to go in. This felt odd as there abit of tightening being done on both left right on my jaw and i felt some initial tightness. Few mins later and i was all done.
I went for a rinse and looked in the mirror.. and there you have it. Braceface. The feeling is odd to describe. It felt like i was wearing one of those mouthguards used for sports. My tongue on the other hand kept trying to flick the braces thinking that it was a foreign object. I was also involuntarily pouting and stretching my lips which made me look like a bit of a goldfish. I picked up my new toothbrushes and was on my merry way.
The first few hours were odd. More of the pouting and flicking. And it was time for lunch. Time to put my braces to work. Knowing it was going to be a bit tough, i ordered some soft noodles for lunch. And then reality kicked in. I was not able to clench my teeth or have contact with the food on any of the teeth that had a bracket on it. Eating suddenly became a challenge. What usually takes me 10 minutes became a chore of 45. Finishing my lunch, i started feeling leftovers stuck all over my brackets and strings. I went back to the office and begin my first journey of what i call now as ‘the wash’. Going through 3 toothbrushes and a mouthwash to get rid of every foreign object in my teeth was an art in itself. Something that i will have to work on. Taking way too long for that. Also, trying to smile feels awkward now too, with my cheeks digging a little into my braces.
The day went on and i begin to slowly feel abit of tightness, particularly around my canines. Any contact with the lowers would have generate a shooting pain across my head. It then got really tiring to hang my jaw slightly open. Evening came and i opted for chicken porridge. This was much easier, as all i had to do was swallow the porridge. I have also started learning the art of bashing chicken with my tongue and the top of my mouth. Back to ‘the wash’ post dinner. And that was Day-1. 599 more to go?
